Peridur® is a commercially proven organic binder for the agglomeration of iron ore pellets and provides several advantages in pellet production. It also improves the metallurgical properties of the pellets.

Peridur is a long chain polyelectrolyte based on cellulose and is non-contaminating to iron ore pellets. Substituted on the cellulose molecule are polar avid groups capable of immobilizing large quantities of water during the pelletization process. Being organic in nature, Peridur is eliminated during the pellet induration process. Its combustion products consist of carbon dioxide and water vapor. There are no elements of sulfur or phosphorus that would be detrimental to the quality of steel.

Peridur provides all the desired characteristics expected of a good binder, and has proven itself on a wide variety of ore types from around the globe. Using Peridur in pellet production has the following advantages:

  • Excellent pellet growth behavior
  • High wet drop numbers at low addition rates
  • Resistance to deformation
  • High dry strengths
  • Resistance to thermal shock
  • Improved size distribution
  • Cleaner pellet surfaces

Peridur can also improve the metallurgical properties of the iron ore pellets:

  • Higher fired pellet porosity and reducibility
  • Lower FeO content
  • Higher melting temperatures
  • Lower gangue content

Additionally Peridur can be used to achieve other positive effects in iron ore processing, such as improving iron recovery during the beneficiation and concentration. When Peridur is used as a bentonite replacement in the pelletization process, silica specifications of the iron ore concentrate can be made less restrictive. The result is higher iron recovery, lower grinding costs, and less reagent usage in the concentrating plant.
